China Becomes the World's Largest Shipping Nation
Published by ECNS
Beijing, China 🇨🇳 - In a significant milestone, China has emerged as the world's foremost shipping nation, surpassing Greece in terms of deadweight tonnage, announced an official from the Ministry of Transport on Tuesday.
The Chinese shipowners' fleet has achieved a staggering total capacity of 249.2 million deadweight tons, cementing China's position as the leader in global shipping. This achievement underscores the critical role played by China's shipping industry within its comprehensive transportation system, supporting economic growth, social development, and key national strategies.
Gao Haiyun, an official associated with the ministry's water transport bureau, highlighted the pivotal role of China's shipping sector in advancing the nation's modernization efforts. China has not only expanded its maritime shipping routes to connect with over 100 countries and regions but has also extended its reach to encompass all coastal nations involved in the Belt and Road Initiative, continually expanding its service network.
Maritime transportation is a linchpin of China's foreign trade, accounting for approximately 95 percent of its volume. This mode of transport is crucial for ensuring the smooth movement of essential commodities, including imported grains and energy resources. Moreover, it has played a vital role in maintaining the stability and efficiency of domestic and international supply chains, contributing to global trade.
China's dominance in shipping is further reflected in its port activities, with the country consistently ranking first in the world for both cargo throughput and container handling. Among the top ten ports globally, China boasts eight positions for cargo throughput and seven for container handling. In the previous year, China's national port cargo throughput recorded an impressive 15.685 billion tons, while container throughput reached a remarkable 296 million TEUs.
As China's shipping industry continues to flourish and expand its global reach, it underscores the nation's commitment to becoming a key player in international trade and logistics.
